Liberty is finally free.
Liberty, a sub-adult loggerhead turtle, was released this morning on Lido Beach by Mote Marine Laboratory officials. The turtle was found on the Fourth of July in the grass flats between Bird Key and north Siesta Beach. Researchers do not know if Liberty is male or female because he or she has not reached adult status.
Liberty was unable to dive when he or she was found, and marks indicated that a boat could have struck him or her. Mote officials treated Liberty with antibiotics.
