“I am into light mysteries and novels. Among my favorite authors are Mark Ferris, Miss Read and Rosemunde Pilcher. I just loved Pilcher’s book ‘Coming Home.’ It is set in pre-World War II and the war years, too. The story is of a young English girl living in England whose parents are on duty in the Far East.”
Kay Tschannen
“Our Christ Church book club just finished reading ‘The Command.’ While it is fiction, there is some fact with the story of a Japanese emperor who marries a commoner. I found it a wonderful insight into Japanese life. Previously, we read Kathryn Stockett’s book, ‘The Help.’ It was another wonderful experience.”
Luther Youngs
“I really enjoy reading the classics. After reading a review in the Wall Street Journal about ‘Don Juan in Hell,’ a part of George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Man and Superman,’ I decided to read the entire work. I am finding it most enjoyable.”
Stella Kelley
“It’s Barack Obama’s book, ‘Dreams from my Father.’ I know he had an interesting relationship with his father, and I am looking forward to learning more about it. It is the library’s book club selection for March.”
Maria Wendel
“I’m reading ‘Shanghai Girls,’ by Lisa See. It is fiction and is the story of a girl growing up in Shanghai prior to World War II, who then immigrates to the United States. I am surprised at the hostility shown to the Chinese immigrants.”
Shirley Ferguson
“I have just finished reading ‘Invisible,’ by Paul Austin. I don’t think I’ll be reading anything else by him. It is the story of a family, and I found it a bit depressing. But I am looking forward to reading ‘The Kite Runner,’ by Khaled Hosseini.”
