The town of Longboat Key’s candidate qualifying period ended at noon, Dec. 21, confirming three contested races and one preliminary election.
Only District 5 commissioner Robert Siekmann’s seat is not being challenged in next year’s election.
The town will hold a preliminary election Tuesday, Jan. 26, because Country Club Shores residents Lynn Larson, Lee Pokoik and incumbent Lee Rothenberg are running for the seat.
Chairman David Brenner will run against District 3 Commissioner Peter O’Connor, who is seeking his third consecutive term in office.
And Bay Isles resident Phillip Younger is running against At-large Commissioner Hal Lenobel, who is seeking his second consecutive term.
Early voting for the District 1 preliminary election will run Tuesday, Jan. 15, through Tuesday, Jan. 22. Early voting for the Tuesday, March 16 general election will run Friday, March 5, through Friday, March 12.

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
