Dorothy Mylan Rooney, 102, of Sarasota and formerly of Longboat Key, died Dec. 12.
Born Jan. 1, 1907, in New York City, she was a retired New York City Public Schools teacher. She and her husband, Frank, moved to Longboat Key in 1972. She was a member of St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church, where she was an active in the Women’s Guild.
Mrs. Rooney is survived by her nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, at Toale Brothers Funeral Homes, Colonial Chapel, 40 N. Orange Ave., Sarasota. A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church, 4280 Gulf of Mexico Drive. Burial will follow at Mansion Memorial Park, in Ellenton.

Youth sailors descend on City Island

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
