Mote announces 'Protect Our Reefs' photo contest

Mote Marine Laboratory announced its “Protect Our Reefs” photo contest. The winning photo will be featured in campaign materials for Mote’s “Protect Our Reefs” specialty license plate in 2010, which will help to fund coral reef research, conservation and education.
Contestants can submit one photo per week until (Sunday begins each new week) until 11:59 a.m., Friday, Jan. 1.
The grand prize is a Key West getaway for two, including a two-night stay at the Island City House Hotel in Old Key West, half-day dive trip for two from Captain’s Corner Dive Center to the USS Vandenberg, a ship recently sunk off Key West as an artificial reef and a Fury Water Adventures “Commotion On The Ocean” sunset sail for two.

Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast. -
Book club sunsets for the season

The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
