McKitrick tees off to win 153rd championship

Longboat Key golf champion Arlene McKitrick won her 153rd championship earlier this month at the International Senior Amateur Golf Society Championship in Bermuda. Golfers from seven countries participated in the tournament.
Entering the final round, McKitrick was four shots behind. But after seven holes, she was tied for the lead. On the 14th hole, she started her charge and won by three shots.
McKitrick said strong winds and extreme elevations with many blind spots made the tournament a challenge.

Leatherback turtle released after two days of rehab

Mote Marine Laboratory’s Sea Turtle Hospital treated one of its largest patients ever recently. Lizzy, a 787-pound leatherback sea turtle rescued from Lee County, came to Mote for rehabilitation after stranding Tuesday, Jan. 5. She was released more than 20 miles off the coast of St. Petersburg two days later. -
