If you have a ripped pool screen cage or park a boat or trailer on the side of your house, the town of Longboat Key is going to eventually force you to fix your screen and park your boats and trailers elsewhere.

At its Monday regular workshop, the Longboat Key Town Commission agreed with staff’s recommendation to strengthen a property maintenance code that right now can only tell property owners to cut weeds and grass.

A rundown Whitney Beach and Plaza and a deteriorating Colony Beach & Tennis Resort have sparked the change to hold some property owners to a higher standard.

Also at its regular workshop, commissioners:

Heard:
• An update on the National Flood Insurance Program, which the town currently participates in.

Discussed:
• A change in a town ordinance to allow for the switch to regular workshops on Mondays.
• Proposed building height regulations.

  • The new homes on LKB are springing up everywhere. Three new homes are under construction in the village alone. There are probably four or five going up on GMD and at least two in Bay Isles. People are investing in our community. That is good. The commission needs to do more to boost the residential real estate market. Getting rid of property blight is essential along with reasonable changes to property maintenance and appearance. Parking boat trailers behind homes is probably a good thing for surrounding home values. But something really must be done about Whitney Plaza. How many times, and for how many years, must we hear "check's in the mail" before we enforce state statutes on blighted commercial property?

    I have been preaching, for the past four years, the need for our community to market our town thome-buyersrs nationally aninternationallyly. We need to make ourselves be seen above the real estate sales clutter. This is best done by the town government and a qualified marketing expert with a great track record.
