The Longboat Key Education’s Center is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, but with new classes such as “Facing Facebook” and “Dance Fiesta!” its course offering for the fall semester, which begins Monday, Oct. 18, is anything but old.

“Every year I try to freshen things up,” says Education Center Executive Director Susan Goldfarb. “We have a lot of new things going on this year that I’m very excited about.”

One new addition is a social-networking class entitled, “Facing Facebook: The Basics,” which takes place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays and teaches class members how to post on their friends’ walls and send Facebook messages.

Those looking for something a little more outdoorsy will enjoy “How to Fish in our Local Waters,” which takes place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays. Capt. Wayne Genther will discuss fishing techniques and where to find species such as snook, tarpon, grouper and snapper.

The Education Center is also re-incorporating museum daytrips into its course schedule for the first time in four years with the “Museum and Gallery Daytrip” class, which will take students Saturday, Dec. 11, to the Museum of Fine Arts, in St. Petersburg.

Another new addition to the Education Center is its own baby grand piano, which was donated. The piano will be used during music-related classes and as part of the center’s first “Baby Grand Series,” a series of intimate salon-style recitals featuring world-class pianists. The concerts will start in January.

The Education Center is also bringing back some old favorites, such as “You’ve Got to See This Movie,” which takes place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, and “Easy Yoga,” which will be taught by Goldfarb from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesdays.

“There is so much to learn here,” says Goldfarb. “It’s important to stimulate the mind. That’s what keeps your spirit young.”
