The new Longboat Key Public Tennis Center building has been under construction while tennis players enjoyed the courts this summer.
But the rest of the project is on hold for now.
Public Works Director Juan Florensa said last week the contractor was performing work in a ditch where a training court is supposed to be built.
But, because the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has not yet issued a permit to perform storm-water drainage work, the contractor was told to work only on the new building for the time being.
The approximately $600,000 project includes a new check-in building, a viewing deck, a teaching court and some building upgrades.
The new building will provide a larger check-in space for tennis players, more office space and larger restroom facilities.
The project is expected to be complete in December.

- IT'S A SHAME THAT THE VERY 1ST COMMENT IS ABOUT RAISING PRICES FOR TENNIS PLAYERS, SOME OF WHOM ARE HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME IN THIS RECESSIONARY ECONOMY. OVER THE NEARLY 10 YEARS OF THE TENNIS CENTER , IT HAS RATHER SUCCESSFULLY BALANCED "AFFORDABILITY" WITH NOT BEING A FINANCIAL DRAG ON THE COMMUNITY. WE TENNIS PLAYERS ARE TAXPAYERS TOO AND DESERVE A LITTLE RETURN ON OUR TAXES ......THE MONIES BEING SPENT ON THIS PROJECT ARE NOT COSTING THE LONGBOAT KEY COMMUNITY ANYTHING......MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THE FUNDS EXISTED IN A SARASOTA BUDGET FOR PROJECTS SUCH AS THIS..
- When the town completes its improvements to this facility, will the cost to those using it increase? It would only seem fair, as private tennis facilities have always charged higher fees for better facilities. Once you improve these facilities, you should also increase the user fees. That's perhaps one way to lessen taxpayer angst, and budget deficits. Again, it would only seem fair.
