High-rise firefighting is one of the toughest tasks in firefighting and one firefighters don’t encounter frequently. So three local departments got a unique opportunity when the Inn on the Beach Association allowed them to train over a three-day period Aug. 24-26 in its 10-story building.
Firefighters from the Longboat Key Fire Rescue Department and the West Manatee and Englewood fire districts gathered for training scenarios, including search-and-rescue situations and rescuing another firefighter (“mayday”) and incident command. The sessions also provided the opportunity to train alongside other departments — a beneficial experience because in a large fire, departments call for mutual aid.
