U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Longboat Key, announced plans on Lido Beach Monday, June 21, to introduce legislation designed to hold oil companies responsible for spills and reform the way the federal government oversees the offshore drilling process.
Buchanan said the bill would remove liability protection for oil companies and require regular safety inspection.
The Oil Spill Prevention Act will be filed in the U.S. House today.

- Way to go Vern, typical politician, being reactive rather than proactive. It was just a few months ago that this newspaper reported on a forum regarding offshore drilling and exploration off of Longboat key. The primary speaker was a former BP exectutive, and current LBK resident, he spoke at length about the benefits of drilling off of Longboat. He assured everyone that the benefits out weighed the risks, which he said were low. Hard to put the toothpaste back in that tube.
- And hopefully he will he repeal the Jones Act and hold the US government responsible for lack of prompt response before any damages are due from oil drilling companies. The tardy response from the government and the lack of immediacy from the current and very temporary occupant of the White House are the cause of the current debacle in the Gulf. The clock should start ticking for payment by the oil drillers only after the government has acted.
Personally I think the lack of concern by the person in charge, the temporary occupant of the White House, is deliberate and is designed to destroy the oil business, aka fossil fuels, in its totality.
