Construction of an 8-foot bicycle path is moving quickly, according to Darren Alfonso, the repavement project’s public information officer for the Florida Department of Transportation.
Work on the path began Monday, June 1, near the Longboat Key Club and Resort Islandside and continued north on Gulf of Mexico Drive. As of Thursday, June 4, construction work was continuing near The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort, 1620 Gulf of Mexico Drive.
AJAX contractors also began paving operations Sunday, May 31, at Bird Key Drive, continuing west to North Adams Drive. Lane closures in that area continue between 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. each day. Repavement of St. Armands Circle will begin in approximately a week-and-a-half, Alfonso said.
Major paving operations on Gulf of Mexico Drive from the Sarasota County line to the Longboat Pass Bridge were completed May 13. Re-striping of the roadway is scheduled for June 15.
