Longboat Key’s first turtle nest of the year was spotted Friday, May 14, just south of the 7-Eleven by Longboat Key Turtle Watch volunteers, who staked the nest to protect it from beachgoers.
Turtle-nesting season began May 1 and runs through Oct. 31. The first nests of the season in Sarasota County were found May 4, in Venice, and May 5, on Siesta Key.
