Longboaters will see an annual increase in their town trash and recycling bills, beginning with their April statements.
Waste Management, as part of its contract that expires after this year, is allowed to increase the base rate for its customers annually. The increase this year rises from $19.20 to $19.53 per month.
The Longboat Key Town Commission has expressed an interest in looking for a new garbage and recycling company once they are allowed to solicit bids next year for such services.

- I suspect the same amount of garbage collected only once a week would cost the same in dump fees. More trucks or more trips perhaps as well. And, for those who don't travel or eat out, the need may indeed be present for twice weekly pickups. Finally, uncollected garbage in this heat would also pose an olfactory challenge to even those who make reservations for dinner, when they're not jet-setting around the world. It's twice a week for a reason.
- RE: Garbage
Why does LBK need twice a week garbage pick-up? I have never experienced it elsewhere. Longboaters eat away from home more and are away on travel more than residents of most other cities. We generate less garbage, yet get it picked-up twice as often. Cut the service to once a week and save money.
