The Longboat Key, Lido Key, St. Armands Key Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for the 2010 Small Business Awards.
Categories for the awards are Small Business of the Year, 10 employees or fewer; Small Business of the Year, 11 or more employees; and Rookie Business of the Year, which is open to companies that have been in business for one to three years as of Jan. 1, 2010.
Judging criteria include business practices and staying power, sales history, expansion and market increases, innovativeness; management philosophy and community involvement.
Nominees must be Chamber members. Self-nominations are encouraged. Completed application forms can be mailed to 5570 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key, Fla. 34228; or faxed to 383-8217. Deadline for applications is March 26. The Chamber’s Small Business Council will announce winners at the Small Business Awards Breakfast June 10.

Youth sailors descend on City Island
Approximately 250 people hit the water Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, for Sailfest. The regatta, Sarasota Youth Sailing's biggest fundraiser of the year, included four classes of competition — Optimus, 420, Laser and Multi-hull — and a barbecue feast.
Book club sunsets for the season
The Sunset Beach Book Club, in its 10th year, ended this season with a luncheon and discussion of the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn, April 18, at Lazy Lobster. Discussion moderator was Ricki Carroll. Together, the group read five books this season.
