Charles Joseph Florio, 89, of Longboat Key, died Jan. 31.
Born Oct. 26, 1920, in New York City, he graduated from Fordham University in New York City at 19. During his time at Fordham, he served as student football manager for the university’s football team. He subsequently qualified for his master’s degree at New York University’s Graduate School of Business Administration. He served in the U.S. Army Finance Corps in north Africa and France during World War II.
Mr. Florio worked for Caltex Petroleum Corp. for more than 32 years coordinating worldwide payrolls and administrating company-benefit plans. In 1980, he retired to Hilton Head Island, S.C., where he lived until 1998, when he moved to Sun City Center. In 2004, he moved to Longboat Key.
Mr. Florio enjoyed sports and managed Little League teams for nine years. He participated in table tennis, billiards and poker clubs and was a frequent visitor to the Sarasota Kennel Club.
Mr. Florio was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Ann Marie. He is survived by sons Nicholas, Michael and Charles Jr.; daughters Ann Marie Bilhar and Catherine Revellese; and 11 grandchildren.
A service took place Friday, Feb. 5, at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church. Memorial contributions can be made to the building fund of St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church, 4280 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key, Fla. 34228.
