The Oaks Club Scholarship is a newly created scholarship awarding $1,000 to a Ringling College of Art and Design Student — student Gal Or of the Illustration Department.
The scholarship comes from The Oaks Club membership committee in remembrance of Bertha Honore Palmer who bought what is today, The Oaks property. She founded it with the intent to entertain business leaders, artists and writers. Today, the Oaks Club is a country club sits on 1,000 acres 12 miles south of downtown Sarasota.
A committee consisting of four The Oaks committee members along with two employees of Ringling College of Art and Design reviewed 30 student portfolios before settling on Or. The committee determined the winner of the scholarship would create a commissioned portrait of Bertha Palmer to be displayed in the clubhouse. On April 16, Or will unveil his portrait at the clubhouse library.
