Director of productions, Chris Van Alstyne, takes a quick break from planning this year's Opera Festival.
The painted model for Act 3 of "Turandot"
The carpentry shop behind the stage at the Opera House is small. So, most of the set building is done at other scenic shops, although, the set for the 2011 production of "Vanessa" was built in this small space.
The door into the scene bay is approximately 9.5 feet tall. Set pieces larger than that dimension must be reconstructed after they get through this door.
Three set pieces for three shows. "The Pearl Fishers," "Of Mice and Men," and "Turandot" have three different styles and characteristics.
This is the largest set piece. It sits at 21.6 feet tall. This side of the dual-opera piece is a backdrop for "The Pearl Fishers" and was designed by Michael Wingfield. The other side is a backdrop designed by Michael Schweikardt for "Turnadot."
