The Lakewood Ranch High girls cross country team cruised to a district title, claiming the top four spots in the Class 3A-District 5 meet Nov. 6 at Lemon Bay High.
Kristin Zarrella won the individual title, finishing the 3.1-mile race in 19.:27. Olivia Ortiz finished second in 19:43 followed by Devin McDermott (third) in 20:01, Natalie Novak (fourth) in 20:02 and Ashley Platt (sixth) in 20:33. Emily Wray who earned all-district honors with a 12th-place finish in 21:50, didn't count toward Lakewood's score.
Braden River, led my Bridget Lanier (ninth in 21:21) and Madison Daunt (13th in 21:56), finished fifth and will also advance to the Class 3A-Region 3 meet Nov. 13 at the Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte.
On the boys side, the Mustangs finished seventh while the Pirates finished 10th. Braden River's Ivo Lima (second in 17:16) earned all-district honors.

Dancing group to host fundraiser

Members of KC and the Sunshine Dancers, a group of Manatee County dancers ages 8 to 20, will show off their dancing skills in jazz, hip-hop and contemporary dance from 7 to 9 p.m. May 28, as the group holds a show titled "Breaking Ground."
