The Sarasota High girls basketball team held on to defeat Lakewood Ranch 50-44 in overtime of the Class 7A-Region 3 semifinals Feb. 11.
With the win, the Lady Sailors will advance to their first regional final since 2011. Sarasota will play host to Fort Myers at 7 p.m. Feb. 15. The winner will advance to the Final Four Feb. 20.
Zharia Grable finished with a game-high 18 points to lead the way for Sarasota. Madison Pack scored 11 points. Camille Giardina finished with 10 points. Shelby Miller added nine points.
Kailyn Scully powered Lakewood with 12 points. LaDhazia Williams scored nine points. Elise Spiller and Emily Bulfin added eight points apiece.
Lakewood finished the season 21-8 and only loses one senior, Bulfin, from this year’s squad.

Instructor jazzes up routine
The East County’s Sue Encke, a jazzercise instructor, recently attended the annual Jazzercise Live event in Washington, D.C., along with more than 1,500 other customers and instructors from across the world.
Tiny Hands supports students
The Tiny Hands Foundation, with the help of more than 200 volunteers, will fill 1,500 backpacks with school supplies for children in need from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 2, at the Boys and Girls Club of Sarasota, 3100 Fruitville Road, Sarasota.
