Lakewood Ranch High wrestler Ty McLeod went 5-0 to win the 160-pound weight class Jan. 5, at the Third annual Kiwanis Classic At The Ranch Wrestling Tournament. The junior, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler, followed up his victory with a 3-1 record at the Dr. McBath Tough Man Duals Jan. 12, at Pasco High.
Why do you think you have been so successful this season?
All summer we had open mats and I was just in here every day. I didn’t miss (a day) and that made me better.
How long have you been wrestling?
I started wrestling last year. I tore my ACL my freshman year. I really wanted to wrestle and couldn’t. I was (mad) about that, so my sophomore year after I made it through (football) injury free, I thought I couldn’t miss out on it.
What do you enjoy the most about wrestling?
I like seeing everyone get better. I like getting better, too, but I like seeing my teammates win just as much. When our team is able to win, it’s really nice.
Do you play any other sports?
Football and track.
Of the sports that you play, which is your favorite?
Wrestling. It’s like a physical challenge. It’s hard to overcome, but you get through it. If you can get through cutting weight, you can get through anything.
Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
I’m thinking about becoming a firefighter. My uncle was doing it, and I heard it’s a good job.
What is your favorite subject?
English. It’s the easiest class to pass.
Who is your biggest role model?
Herschel Walker. He trains hard to be successful.
If you could go anywhere on a free vacation, where would it be?
Jamaica. I hear it’s beautiful there.
Do you have any siblings?
I have two brothers, Wyatt McLeod and Josh Simmons, and two sisters, Kyndra McLeod and Amber Simmons.
Do you have a favorite sports team?
The University of Florida Gators.
