Students at Gullett Elementary School did their part in the ongoing fight against cancer.
Through the school's Pasta for Pennies program, the school collected $2,710.94 to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Some students earned the money by doing chores at home, while others brought in money they were saving for other purposes. One class brought in more than $300 alone and won an Olive Garden lunch as its reward.
Gullett's Student Council voted on the project, and the members helped the classes count pennies. Gullett also will receive special recognition from the Leukemia Society as a "Champion for Change" school for bringing in more than $2,009 in the year 2009.
A major incentive for our students was helping our Honored Hero, Ava, a 5-year-old who was diagnosed with leukemia in November.
