As Manatee County District 5 Commissioner Donna Hayes prepared to lead the pledge of Allegiance at her Advisory Committee meeting May 1, she pulled out a miniature American flag and waved it briefly.
The meeting’s new location, The Preserve Golf Club, did not have a flag in the room.
“This came out of the trunk of my car,” Hayes said. “You can never go anywhere without a flag.”
