It seems like only yesterday I was bidding farewell to the spring season. Summer was finally here, and I was looking forward to the calm before the storm — those three long hot months when school is out of session.

Last week, I flew to Detroit, to visit my 88-year-old grandmother, whom I hadn’t seen since my wedding. It had been even longer since I’d seen many of my other relatives, as well.
