LETTER TO THE LETTER: Regarding 'The Birth of Spirit of America'
Date: July 14, 2010
by: Rick Steele | University Park
Dear Editor:
I enjoyed your editorial of July 1, 2010. It is altogether fitting and proper that we honor those who were willing to give all to ensure the birth of our nation.
But I think you went off the tracks just at the end of the editorial when you discussed the Tories and loyalists in the Colonies who sided with King George in 1776. Did you mean to compare Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh to the Tories and loyalists? I hope not. Beck, while an admitted alcoholic, has done a lot in the last few years to alert Americans to the coming danger of our country. Sort of like a modern Paul Revere. And Rush? He single handedly saved an entire industry: AM radio. He has just a little of George Washington’s spirit in the half of his brain that he uses on the air.
So happy birthday America and to all those willing to pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.
Editor's note: We apparently needed an editor. We were not saying Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh were like Tories and Loyalists. Whoa, to the contrary. We were trying to say that Tories and Loyalists thought essayists such as Thomas Paine were regarded as treasonous extremists in the Revolution, just as Obama supporters think Beck and Limbaugh are extremist agitators now. To the contrary, they are the Thomas Paines of our day — the good guys.
