+ Slow down and save wildlife
Dear Editor:
I am writing in hope that our Lakewood Ranch residents will stop to ponder this important message and the posted speed limits within our community. We are blessed to live in one of the most beautiful, pristine areas of the state, filled with natural wonder and abundant wildlife.
Why, then, is it that more and more of our precious creatures are ending up victims of hit-and-run drivers?
During the past few months, I have witnessed several events that have caused me complete outrage.
Let’s face it, accidents happen to the best of us, but are we all in such a hurry that we cannot abide by the posted speed limits within our area? What appointment or event is so pressing that we forget to use caution in our daily commutes?
Did you know that our native sand cranes mate for life? Spring is their breeding season, and they will be crossing our streets with tiny colts (chicks). Be on the lookout for them and revel in the tender care that they give their young. Watch for our beautiful deer, especially in the evening. Majestic hawks and other birds can also be on the roadway, swooping down to seek their food or some larger species can be low flying as they take off and land.
I know our residents are among the best, special and caring people who love their homes and families. I ask you all to take that same consideration when making your way through a busy day on the road.
Remember: take note of all the animals and birds with which we share our world. They are a large part of what makes the Lakewood Ranch area so very special.
