+ Background bolsters Fitzgerald’s potential
I was dismayed by your recent article, “Candidate Fitzgerald: Can he teach and run?” which questions Democrat Keith Fitzgerald’s right to run for Congress.
The logic? He is a college professor, and this is seen by some as a conflict of interest, because the Legislature funds colleges. In other words, Fitzgerald may do something in Congress that favors education. A more laughable, intellectually bankrupt idea I have yet to come across.
On the contrary, a Congressman Fitzgerald would be a refreshing and rare gift to the people of Florida. His background is squeaky clean, and as a teacher of political science, he is probably more knowledgeable about democratic principles than anyone in Tallahassee.
Compare his résumé to that of his opponent, Congressman Vern Buchanan, dragging a ton of baggage known to anyone who follows the news.
To me, “Can he teach and run?” is nothing more than a petty partisan distraction from the serious issues facing voters in November.
