East County residents enjoyed an afternoon of food and fun during the fourth annual Chili Cook-Off Nov. 13 on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch. Guests sampled a variety of chili, as Manatee County Emergency Services battled for the title of the county’s best chili. Those in attendance also enjoyed listening to the sounds of Paper Airplanes, got an up close look at several fire trucks and ambulances and climbed a rock wall, among other games and activities.

Manatee County commissioners, county officials and Tom Bennett's extended family celebrated the completion of a dream during the Bennett Park grand opening celebration and festival Nov. 12. Former commissioner Jonathan Bruce spoke about the park's long history, and Lakewood Ranch High School's JROTC presented the colors during the ceremony. Commissioner and veteran Larry Bustle raised the American flag for the first time at the park.

During the event, Freedom recognized and thanked military veterans for their service, raising a flag in honor of each branch. Students also enjoyed singing songs and listing to guest speakers, including District 67 state Rep. Greg Steube.
