Team members of the American League Champion Tampa Bay Rays donated a portion of their salary to the Rays Baseball Foundation, which supports youth and education programs in the Tampa Bay region.
Through this foundation and the Manatee Education Foundation, the Manatee County School District received $5,000 to help fund Baseball Math, a program that uses baseball concepts and statistics to teach mathematics. The curriculum for Baseball Math was developed by Dr. James Schoedler, a physical education teacher at Freedom Elementary in the East County.
Some of the players who donated portions of their salaries and team President Matt Silverman were on hand when Manatee Education Foundation Director Mary Glass received the check from the Rays Baseball Foundation at Tropicana Field.
For more information on Baseball Math or the Manatee Education Foundation, contact Mary Glass at 941-708-8770, Ext. 2148.
