The results are in.
Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch yesterday released results from the 2012 Nike International Friendlies Tournament, held Nov. 28 through Dec. 2. at SMR's Premier Sports Campus.
The tournament, which attracted more than 6,000 players and 15,000 fans, generated more than $11.3 million in economic impacts to the region.
“The event was a great success for the area in every way,” said Premier's Director of Sports Tim Mulqueen. “We brought the very best youth soccer teams in America here for all the community and future soccer stars to see and aspire to be. The four international games were exciting, with 37 goals scored. The final match between the U.S. and Portugal drew thousands of spectators who saw a thrilling 4-3 win by Portugal.”
Of the 176 teams represented at the tournament, now it is second year at Premier, all but 10 were from out of state.

- I never believe any of SMR Economic impact reports from these events. The numbers never add up. If the 176 teams had 6000 players, that would be 34.1 players per team; not likely.
That would be 2.5 fans per player, if there were 34 players per team. More likely 15 players per team, so lets assume 44% of the 15000 fans, or 6600 fans.
Now lets assume for a moment that 21000 humans actually showed up and generated $11.3 million dollars. That's $538.10 per person! Not likely, not even close. I travel for baseball tournaments, and I spend a maximum for $400 for 5 of us, $600 if it's a 3-day event; mostly hotel.
Now lets assume that all but 10 of those teams were from out of state (166). That's 5,400 hotel hotels (1 for each player) There are not that many hotel rooms within 30 miles. Lets assume that it was 2,490 hotel rooms; that's still quite a stretch.
Those numbers are pure fiction. Reality says that 8600 humans showed up and spent approximately $150 per person (an exaggerated amount), that's only $1.29 million, just a fraction of the $11.3 million dollars SMR claims. Did SMR provide any real math to justify their numbers?
