East County residents kicked off the July 4 weekend with a special seafood buffet and live entertainment at Lake Osprey Plaza June 3. Lucky Pelican owners Jim and Beth Poitrast and Lake Osprey Cabaret owner Jack David joined forces for the first Pelican Palooza, which featured acts such as guitarist Thom Parks and The Glass Onion Band, as well as activities for children.
Crowds out for Music on Main

Music lovers pulled out their lawn chairs and lined Main Street Lakewood Ranch June 3 for the plaza’s monthly Music on Main event. The band Yesterdayze brought back the sounds of the 1960s for the event, which also raised money for the United Way of Manatee County.

"Deadliest Catch" captain anchors on Main Street

Inclement weather didn't stop dozens of East County residents from coming out to welcome Capt. Keith Colburn of the fishing vessel Wizard, which is featured on the Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch." More than 100 fans greeted Colburn during a private reception July 1 at the Fete Ballroom at the Polo Grill and Bar. Colburn answered questions about the show while signing autographs and posing for pictures with guests. Guests also enjoyed the sounds of the Rye Road Band. Proceeds from the event, which was in conjunction with the Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix Festival, benefitted the Suncoast Foundation for the Handicapped, Inc.

Florida institutes news seat belt law

On June 30, a new seat belt law went into effect, making it a primary offense not to wear a seat belt. The change means that law enforcement officers can pull over cars if they spot a driver, front seat passenger or individuals under 18 years old not wearing a seat belt.
