Area residents hit the streets for children

Dozens of children, teens and adults hit the Lakewood Ranch pavement March 7 for the annual Take Stock in Children of Manatee County 10K Run/Walk and Fun Run. Participants enjoyed coffee, juice and donuts and other entertainment before hitting the streets. Superintendent Tim McGonegal served as the official Race Marshall.
Mixon festival sweetens spring

Hundreds of families flooded Mixon Fruit Farms for the business' annual Orange Blossom Festival March 6-7. The festival featured plenty of activities for the kids, live music, tours of the grove and other family entertainment.
Teens brave cold at second Campout for a Cause

The chilly evening didn't deter Lakewood Ranch High School students from spending the night at school for the second Campout for a Cause March 5. The event, which featured live music from several bands, raised money for Taking Back Lives, To Write Love in Her Arms, SOLVE Maternity Home, Honor Sanctuary Animal Rescue, Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities and the Food Bank of Manatee.

The Venturas performed a variety of popular tunes across several genres during Lakewood Ranch's Music on Main March 5. The event, which benefited The Family Network on Disabilities, also featured a visit from the Budweiser Clydesdales and more.
LWRBA hosts monthly networking social

Members of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance gathered at the Polo Grill and Bar for a networking social March 3. The event was scheduled to be held at the Sarasota Polo Club, but chilly temperatures forced the organization to switch locations. Guests enjoyed beverages and hors d'oeuvres while mingling with other business professionals.

Ranch tourney lures local youth

Dozens of East County children cast their lines for the Fourth Annual Youth Fishing Tournament Sunday at Summerfield Lake in Lakewood Ranch. The event, hosted by Lakewood Ranch Community Activities and the Lakewood Ranch Anglers Club, included two hours of fishing, a picnic lunch and an awards ceremony. Prizes were awarded to the top fishermen in each of three age categories.

East County residents Kurt and Lichi Fowler hosted an old-fashioned square dance Feb. 27 at their home as a fundraiser for Family Promise of Manatee County. The event featured food, fires, fellowship and, of course, plenty of dancing.

Little Bookworms celebrated its fifth anniversary with a birthday bash Feb. 27. Eager readers flooded the Lakewood Ranch shop and enjoyed a variety of activities, including magic, storytime, arts and crafts, and, of course, birthday cake.
Freedom dads, daughters share special night

More than 100 families hit the dance floor for Freedom Elementary School's annual Father/Daughter Dance Feb. 26 at the school. Dads and grandfathers boogied to a variety of tunes while colorful lighting and refreshments completed the atmosphere.
