After surpassing the 1,000-point mark against Port St. Lucie in the Class 7A-Region 3 quarterfinals last season, Braden River High senior forward Trevon Young scored 39 points last week to lead the Pirates to a 2-0 record to start the season. Young scored 24 points and 13 rebounds in a 55-52 season-opening victory over Palmetto Nov. 27 and 15 points and 17 rebounds in a 63-46 district victory over Venice Nov. 29.
What does it mean to you to have surpassed the 1,000-point mark?
It means a lot. Basically, my teammates in the past have given up the ball and passed it to me. It’s a milestone. It’s a great opportunity because nobody else at Braden River has done it before.
What do you enjoy the most about basketball?
Playing with my family. We’re a family here. We enjoy (playing with each other) but we know there’s a time to have fun and to be serious.
What are your goals for this season?
To win another district championship. It would be great to leave high school with another district championship.
Who is your biggest role model?
My mom. She does everything for me. She pushes me all of the time even when I don’t want to be (pushed). She teaches me to be a man and take care of my responsibilities.
Do you have a favorite subject?
Math. I’m good with numbers.
If you could play another sport for a day besides basketball or football, what would it be?
Water polo. I first saw it this (summer) in the Olympics. I saw it and thought it looked interesting. It would be (interesting) to try something like that.
If you could play anywhere in the world, where would it be?
The Bahamas. Everyone talks about how beautiful it is with the beaches and the sand.
Do you have a favorite professional athlete?
Dwyane Wade. He puts so much effort into basketball, and he does it all of the time.
What’s the biggest thing basketball has taught you?
How to be a team player. There’s no one person in basketball. You have to have a team (to be successful).
