Asolo Repertory Theatre announces 2013-2014 season

Asolo Repertory Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards, along with Associate Artistic Director Greg Leaming, announced Asolo Rep’s and FSU/Asolo Conservatory’s 2013/2014 season lineup on March 18, at the theater.

This year, the fall musical will extend through the December holidays, and the spring musical will arrive earlier to make it in the rep season. The lineups are as follows:

Asolo Repertory Theatre

New Stages Tour: “Romeo and Juliet” — dates TBD
Adapted by Lauryn E. Sasso and Dmitry Troyanovsky
Directed by Dmitry Troyoanovsky
Description: The classic tale and tragedy of two star-crossed lovers.

“Show Boat” — runs from Nov. 12 through Dec. 29
Music by Jerome Kern; book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; based on the novel by Edna Ferber
Directed by Rob Ruggiero
Description: The great American musical about forging the Mississippi River and the social changes taking place in the country.

“Philadelphia, Here I Come!” — runs from Jan. 7, 2014, through April 12, 2014

Description: A young man leaves his Ireland hometown and roots behind to adventure to America.

“Other Desert Cities” — runs Jan. 15, 2014, through Feb. 27, 2014

Description: A play by the creator of TV’s “Brothers & Sisters” is a dysfunctional family drama about an ex-senator and his wife returning home for Christmas for the first time in six years.

Description: Durang’s latest Broadway hit about a farmhouse and the siblings who inhabit it blends comedy and absurdity.

“The Grapes of Wrath” — runs March 12, 2014, through April 19, 2014

Description: The American story of hope that follows the Joad family’s journey from Oklahoma to California in search of land, jobs and dignity.

“4,000 Miles” — runs April 2 through 27, 2014 (In Historic Asolo Theater)

Description: A story about how two outsiders find their way, which circles around 21-year-old Leo who bikes 4,000 miles from Seattle to his grandmother’s home in Manhattan, N.Y.

“Hero” — runs April 29, 2014, through June 1, 2014
Book and concept by Aaron Thielen; music and lyrics by Michael Mahler
Directed by David H. Bell
Description: A musical, which premiered in 2012, about a comic book artist who faces unexpected events.

Unplugged 2014, curated by Greg Leaming, and summer musical 2014 TBA.

“The School For Lies” — runs Oct. 30 through Nov. 17

Description: It’s 1666 Paris, and a misanthrope falls in love with a fashionista.

“Loot” — runs Jan. 2, 2014, through Jan. 19, 2014

Description: A black farce about Hal and Dennis trying to hide the look from a bank robbery and the funny incidents that take place throughout.
