Betty Schoenbaum was the big shot last week at the American Jewish Committee?s 2007 Human Relations Award Dinner on Thursday, Jan. 25, at Michael?s On East that was chaired by Sally Yanowitz and Judy Abroms. Schoenbaum was honored with the Human Relations Award at the event and graciously accepted her award with a heart-warming speech that offered words of wisdom and amusing tidbits. She elaborated on her charitable giving: ?Don?t give until it hurts. Give until it feels good.? She also cited a quote from her friend, Bea Friedman, ?There are no luggage racks on the hearse.? And, she recounted how she met her husband, Alex, the original ?Big Boy? ? ?He said to me the first time he saw me, ?My mother wants me to marry a Jewish girl and I?ve never met a beautiful one before.??
By the way, AJC announced that night that it will award its 2007 Civic Achievement Award to Larry Thompson on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007 at Michael?s On East.
