Jewish Theological Seminary Outreach Weekend takes place from 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Temple Beth Sholom. Dr. David Roskies, professor of Jewish Literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary, will speak on “The Making of the Modern Jewish Memory.” Dr. Roskies is an author, Jewish literature professor and cultural historian of eastern European Jewry. During Friday night services, which start at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, he will be speaking about “Covenantal Memory: How Jews Remember.” During his presentation during Saturday services, which start at at 9 a.m., he will discuss “In Wartime: When the Cannons Roar, the Muses are Never Silent." At 12:30 pm, Dr. Roskies will discuss “Reading in Time: A Holocaust Curriculum for Conservative Jews.”

Community members joined hands Saturday, May 18 on Siesta Key beach as a symbol of their support for the protection of coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife and fisheries. Supporters voiced their concern about damage that happens due to offshore oil drilling accidents, hydraulic fracturing, the Alberta tar sands, mountain top removal mining, and about coal fired power plants. Forty-two people joined hands for the Hands Across the Sand national movement. -
