The Glenridge Performing Arts Center presents Cynthia Sayer and Her Hot Jazz Trio, co-produced by South County Jazz Club and GPAC, at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Glenridge Performing Arts Center. Cynthia Sayer, regarded as the top four string banjoist in the world, is back in Sarasota by popular demand, playing her unique style of swing and hot jazz. A member of Woody Allen’s jazz band for over 10 years, Sayer’s solo career has taken her well beyond her New Orleans roots to become a world renowned bandleader and guest artist. Her eclectic, swing-based repertoire showcases the surprising range and power of jazz banjo. Sayer is currently working on a new CD, ”Joy Ride,” which is expected to be released in the spring of 2012. Tickets are on sale now for $20 at gpactix.com or by calling the GPAC box office at 552-5325. Groups of 10 or more receive a reduced rate of $17.50. Community members joined hands Saturday, May 18 on Siesta Key beach as a symbol of their support for the protection of coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife and fisheries. Supporters voiced their concern about damage that happens due to offshore oil drilling accidents, hydraulic fracturing, the Alberta tar sands, mountain top removal mining, and about coal fired power plants. Forty-two people joined hands for the Hands Across the Sand national movement. -

Children from all over Sarasota County participated in the 2013 Sarasota Kiwanis Spelling Bee Program Friday, May 17 at the Lee Wetherington Boys and Girls Club. More than 100 third and fourth graders in bright yellow t – shirts competed to show off their skills and win one of three cash prizes. Booker High School and Sarasota High School Key Club sold pizza for $1 a slice and parents quizzed children in preparation for the spelling bee.
