The Glenridge Performing Arts Center presents "Nutcracker" by Jazz Juvenocracy, co-produced by GPAC and Jazz Juvenocracy, at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at 7333 Scotland Way, Sarasota. There will also be performances at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23. Jazz Juvenocracy presents a truly unique version of Tchaikovsky's beloved holiday tradition. The music of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, John Coltrane, David Berger and the Sultans of Swing comes alive in this high energy, contemporary retelling of the heartwarming holiday classic. Imaginique Contemporary Ballet Company features several former members of the Sarasota Ballet dancing the roles of the Arabians, Flowers and the Sugar Rum Cherry. The choreography by MaryElizabeth Ameal, staging by Stefan Gernaga, and original arrangements by Jazz Juvenocracy provide a fresh twist on a long held favorite. Tickets are on sale now for $25 at gpactix.com or by calling the GPAC box office at 552-5325. Groups of 10 or more receive a reduced rate of $22.50. GPAC Family and students get a discounted rate of $20. Members of South County Jazz Club and the Jazz Club of Sarasota will get a $5 discount.

Community members joined hands Saturday, May 18 on Siesta Key beach as a symbol of their support for the protection of coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife and fisheries. Supporters voiced their concern about damage that happens due to offshore oil drilling accidents, hydraulic fracturing, the Alberta tar sands, mountain top removal mining, and about coal fired power plants. Forty-two people joined hands for the Hands Across the Sand national movement. -
