As a starter to Selby Public Library's One Book/One Community program series and to commemorate Pearl Harbor Day, the library will be showing a Stephen E. Ambrose documentary directed by Steven Spielberg at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Selby Public Library. The 90-minute film covers the Pacific theater of World War II from Dec. 7, 1941 to Sept. 1945. Narrated by Tom Brokaw, this film will provide a historical background for upcoming discussions of Laura Hillenbrand’s book, "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption."

The recent red tide bloom has been reported offshore of Hernando County in the area of a large fish kill.
Woman arrested for June theft
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested Jessica Barker of Lehigh for the alleged theft of more than $300 worth of merchandise from Ulta Beauty on South Tamiami.

Sarasota Cuban Ballet School hosted a six-week summer intensive for students from around the world. A leader of classical dance training in Cuba, Ramona de Saa, visited as a guest teacher. The culmination of the weeks are a performance from its students visiting from the National Ballet School of Cuba Aug. 1.
