Abstract Painting in Mixed Media I with Fernando Madridejos Mixed Media, All Levels Tuesdays, Jan 8 – Feb 12, 2013; 9:30-12:30pm $170m/$200nm; Artist Demo: Jan 5, 2013, 1-4pm free The class is designed to develop ways of saying things and translating the drawn or verbal image into the language of abstraction, thus achieving the student's artistic potential. Students will be encouraged to find their own style through experimentation. Learn the technique of using acrylic paints with other mediums for special effects on different surfaces. Approach to different styles of abstract paintings and use of color, line, forms and collages will be covered. There will be demos, creative exercises and one-on-one instruction for each student followed by critiques. Beginners welcome.

The Lakewood Ranch High volleyball team captured its fourth straight district title with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-13 victory over Sarasota in the Class 7A-District 10 championship Oct. 23. Nicole Grant powered the Lady Mustangs with 12 kills, two blocks and eight digs. Layne Thompson added 11 kills and one block. Kaylee York recored seven kills, one block and nine digs. Courtney Rapp dished out 35 assists and had a block. Lakewood will play host to East Lake in a regional quarterfinal match Oct. 29. Sarasota will travel to Seminole for its regional quarterfinal.
