As part of immunization awareness month this August, area health officials remind young adults of what vaccinations they should get to protect themselves from preventable diseases likely to strike their age group.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 40 million adults die annually from diseases that can be prevented with immunizations.

According to the CDC, the most important vaccines for young adults age 19 to 26 include:
• Flu vaccine
• Pneumonia vaccine
• Human papilloma virus (HPV) Gardasil vaccine
• Tetanus (lockjaw)
• Pertussis (whooping cough)
• Tetanus boosters (Td and TDaP)

Gardasil and TDaP vaccines are available for free at DOH-Sarasota Immunization Clinics. Health officials also offer the pneumonia vaccine at no charge for those in the 19 to 26 age group at high risk for lung diseases and certain other chronic diseases.

Immunizations are available at two locations, Monday through Friday. Call for hours at each location.
