Sarasota’s art community suffered a loss Nov. 7 with the death of local gallery owner Allyn Gallup. A champion and guardian of local artists and contemporary, daring new work, Gallup opened the Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art Gallery in 1991; it’s been a home and bastion for new and local artists and their diverse work and ideas.

“He was very courageous in the kind of art he was showing in Sarasota,” says Sheila Moore, Gallup’s widow and partner at the gallery. “He wasn’t in it for the money but for the love of the art and the artists.”

According to Moore, the gallery’s upcoming exhibit, “Bruce Marsh: Now and Then,” will go on as scheduled with an opening reception 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Moore plans to honor Gallup by continuing to operate the gallery and exhibit new works and artists.
