THURSDAY, AUG. 4

Pokemon Go Tournament

Catch 'em all at part two of this four-week Pokemon Go tournament at Growler's Pub. Spend an hour hunting Pokemon in the Indian Beach area before the prize party. First place gets a $15 bar tab and second place gets a free beer. On the fourth week of the tournament, Growler's will crown a champion, who will win the grand prize.

See what's brewing around town with this trolley tour of Sarasota-area beer gardens, breweries and craft-beer hot spots in the Sarasota-Manatee area. This tour features stops at Mr. Beerys, Calusa Brewing and Craft Growlers To Go and Tasting Room and ticket includes craft beer at each of the stops and a complimentary beer from a guest brewery on the trolley.
 

Throwback Thursday

Hip-hop heads and ’90s nostalgics rejoice — the Starlite Room's new weekly event, Throwback Thursdays, features classic hip-hop and soul music by DJ Moka, DJ Imminent and DJ Galati. This week's event features a back-to-school supply drive for local elementary school students.

 

FRIDAY, AUG. 5

Music on Main

Lakewood Ranch Main Street is home to this free monthly concert series and block party, featuring live music by the Ocean Road Band, as well as food vendors, beer trucks and children's activities. Proceeds from the event will benefit Selah Freedom. No coolers. Dogs welcome on a short leash.

 

First Friday Gulf Gate

TGIF. Celebrate by supporting local businesses at this monthly Gulf Gate shopping event, featuring local vendors, happy hours and in-store specials from participating businesses.

 

'Honk Jr.'

Players Centre for Performing Arts Summer Camp presents its performance of "Honk Jr.," which tells the story of an ugly duckling on an adventure of self-discovery. Maybe being different isn't a bad thing. 

 

Pitbull Toddler

You've heard them on the radio during your morning commute; now Catch Pitbull Toddler, a band featuring members of the cast of "The Mike Calta Show," live in Sarasota. The evening will include drink specials and giveaways.

Midsummer Carnival

Summer is already halfway over — or only halfway over. It depends on how you look at it. Whether you're the glass-half-full type or not, your cup will runneth over at Mandeville's Midsummer Carnival, featuring 10 specialty beers on tap from Bell's Brewery, carnival games, free popcorn and cotton candy and live music by The Essentials.

 

Ballroom Blitz

Independent Jones, a grassroots movement with the goal of establishing a dedicated live local music venue, presents a full-force, all-ages rock show, featuring Bradenton-based prog-rock band, Makari and Altru, a pop-punk five-piece, also from Bradenton. The show is the first of a series called “Ballroom Blitz” hosted at the Manatee Performing Arts Centeron the second floor, in the Kiwanis Ballroom. 
 

SUNDAY, AUG. 7

Trash Fish Dinner

Don't be thrown by the name. This third-annual dinner is one of the finest foodie evenings of the year — and it's for a good cause. Chefs from seven of the area's best restaurants will put creative spins on invasive and underutilized seafood, and it's all in the name of sustainability. Whether it's "trash fish," invasive species or sustainably farmed fish, guests will learn alternatives to the over-fished species that typically dominate restaurant menus. The limited-seating dinner includes two rounds of hors d'oeuvres and five courses, and proceeds will benefit Chefs Collaborative scholarships and education programs.

Very Merry Jerry Day

Celebrate Jerry Garcia's legacy at this annual WSLR tribute, featuring music by Passerine, RJ Howson, the Schmitz Brothers Band and Ship of Fools, as well as food by Angry Mike and other local vendors.

 

TUESDAY, AUG. 9

Cards Against McCurdy's

7 p.m. at McCurdy's Comedy Theatre, 1923 Ringling Blvd.

$25 per team; one-drink minimum; $3 for spectators

Cards Against Humanity bills itself as the party game for horrible people. This summer, muster up your most offensive jokes and despicable quips and head to McCurdy's for this summer-long tournament, centered around the game. You don't have to be horrible to compete — but it can't hurt. Teams of four to six competitors vie for $1,500 in prizes. Championship takes place in late September.

 

Homemade Ice Cream and Beer Pairing

We all scream for ice cream. Only some of us scream for beer. Indulge in both at this pairing event — just use your indoor voice. Mr. Beery's, in collaboration with Orange Octopus ice cream shop on Siesta Key to pair four 6-oz. craft beers with as many homemade ice cream flavors. Try them separately, together or as a float.

 

Summer Chef Jam

'Vaudeville's Dead'
