Art Lecture Series: Andy Warhol

Local art historian Baila Miller continues her series on important American artists with a lecture on the king of pop art: Andy Warhol. More than just paintings of Marilyn Monroe and Campbell tomato soup cans, Miller will explore Warhol’s life and evolution as an artist and his impact on not only art, but on pop culture.

Two of America’s premiere harpists sit down for a free concert for Sarasota classical music fans. Cheryl Losey Feder, principal harpist for the Sarasota Orchestra, and Ann Hobson Pilot, former principal harpist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, have been friends for years but get to perform for the first time together and will present music by Bach, Debussy, and Scott Joplin.

One Man, Two Guvnors

Written by Richard Bean and adapted from Carlo Goldoni’s 1746 comedy, this comedic play tells the story of an English village idiot suddenly finding himself under the employ of two different criminals. His dual back-and-forth criminal antics are underscored by a live band playing rockabilly and British-invasion rock ’n’ roll standards. Runs through Jan. 10

'Straight No Chaser'

Before “Glee” and before Pentatonix, there was Straight No Chaser. Started as a student a cappella group at Indiana University in 1996, the all-male group has released five albums with Atlantic Records and have performed with such legends as Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Elton John, Dolly Parton and Stevie Wonder.

Hosted by local Sarasota comedians Christine Alexander, Joey Panek and Beneva Fruitville, Friday Night Live is the Players Theatre’s new sketch comedy and improve show. Laugh into the weekend with spoofs on classic television shows, pop culture and the people and places in Sarasota.

 

SATURDAY, NOV. 21 

Rock for a Cause

Sarasota’s battle of the bands returns for year two daylong rock and roll and art education fundraising. This year’s participating bands include Shore Dogs, Audiosphere, Jah Movement, Paige Merriman, Doug Burns, the South Trail Band and Seven Years Past. The winner of the battle will receive a cash prize of $1, 500 and get to allocate $3,500 to a music department at the Sarasota County school of their choice.

 

Darwin Brewing Co. Bourbon-Barrel-Aged Big Deal Bottle Release

The world of William Shakespeare returns to the Bay Preserve at Osprey. Overlooking Little Sarasota Bay, guests will enjoy the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training’s summer camp adaptation of the gender-bending comedy “Twelfth Night” at the Bay Preserve’s outdoor pavilion.
