June 27, 1974

Storm Wallops Siesta Key!

Wind gusts hit 70 mph. Salt and sand flooded lawns, and homes were without power the night that an early tropical storm surprised Siesta Key residents in 1974. The article describes the storm: "The crescendo of wind and rain rose steadily through Monday night, and combined with high tides and pounding surf, left a trail of devastation to be cleaned up Tuesday when the storm abated."

The Art and Design of Construction

In 1991, the campus of Ringling College of Art and Design was expanding to include a new studio complex and renovating three buildings. The new nine-classroom building was built on property between Tamiami Trail and Old Bradenton Road just south of the Selby Gallery and included a courtyard. It housed the departments of illustration and graphic design. The renovated buildings were formerly a convenience store, a car wash and a laundromat on Martin Luther King Jr. Way east of Old Bradenton Road. It was transformed into a fine arts studio complex and a liberal arts classroom building.
