VSC hires new director of sports

Robert Wells has been named the new director of sports for Visit Sarasota County. 

In his new position, Wells will manage sports tourism strategy and goals while also recruiting sporting events to Sarasota County. He’ll also be responsible for expanding and creating new events that will bring positive economic impact to the area.

Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Inc. Chief Operating Officer Nicole Rissler previously held the position with the county's regional tourism organization before joing the team overseeing Nathan Benderson Park.

Wells earned his degree in sports management with a minor in business management and organization from Baldwin-Wallace College, in Berea, Ohio. 

Most recently, Wells spent three years working for the Naples, Marco Island, Everglades Convention and Visitors Bureau as its Sports Marketing Manager and eventually its senior sports marketing manager. Wells also is a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard.
