The Second Annual Siesta Key Crystal Classic kicked off this morning with an opening ceremony dedicated to U.S. Veterans.

The ceremony was dedicated in particular to the United States Marine Corps. Today marks the 236th anniversary of their inception. Opening ceremonies of the Crystal Classic were held in front of an Iwo Jima sculpture created by Brian Wigelsworth, master sand sculptor of Siesta Key.

“The statue of Iwo Jima is what’s important to us today,” Bobby “Captain Midnight” Martin, Color Guard commander of Alpha Company, Vietnam Brotherhood said. “The pride, the dedication, the honor, and the respect that the marines offer our society. Not only on the battlefield, but in our communities.”
