Authorities closed the Westfield Southgate Shopping Center for over an hour today after an unknown substance was thrown into a shop inside the mall.

The mall, which reopened around 1:40 p.m., was on lockdown as members of the Sarasota County Fire Department investigated an unidentified powder material. The substance was thrown into the LensCrafters store at the mall just after noon.

Authorities are still uncertain of the material, but believe it was a crushed-up, nonhazardous solid product, according to Sarasota Police spokeswoman Genevieve Judge. No injuries were reported.

The suspect is still unknown, and the FBI is assisting in the investigation, Judge said.

This is a breaking story and information will be added as it becomes available.
