Turtle watchers discovered the first turtle nests of the season Sunday, May 1 — the first day of the six-month nesting season.

Longboat Key Turtle Watch volunteers discovered a nest in the 6600 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive, on Longboat Key, while Mote Marine turtle watchers found another nest on the southern part of the island.

According to Hayley Rutger, Mote public relations specialist, volunteers also discovered a nest this morning on Siesta Key.
