Maybe it's the crackle of the microphone. Maybe it's the short sets and revolving door of eclectic acts. It could even be the groan-worthy "Mustang Sally" covers. Whatever it is, there's something great about open mic nights. It's a chance for new musicians to get their foot in the door, experienced musicians to try out new material or jam with others, and it's also a way for music fans to see something new. So, whether you're a performer or just a tune hound, we've put together a list of some of our favorite open mic nights in town.

  • Growler's Pub: Tuesdays at 9 p.m.  This is the type of open-mic night where you can catch both established musicians trying out new material and first-timers in the same night — in a good way. The crowd is supportive, and it's a low-pressure environment for anyone with stage fright.
  • StarKeeper Café: Mondays at 6 p.m. One of downtown Sarasota's hidden gems, Star Keeper Café offers a great opportunity for new musicians to get a taste of performing live.
  • Whiskey Barrel: Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.. This Gulf Gate bar features a variety of musicians on a weekly schedule. Sign up, hop on stage and have some fun.
  • Old School bar and Grill: Wednesdays from 8 p.m. to midnight. It might be new to the downtown music scene, but Old School offers a convenient central location for musicians looking to show off their skills, as well as a good built-in crowd.
  • Siesta Key Oyster Bar: Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Established Sarasota musician Ben Hammond hosts this weekly open mic. Sign up and show the Key what you've got.
  • J.R.'s Old Packinghouse Café: Mondays at 7 p.m. A popular hangout for blues and folk hotshots, this bar is the place to go to try out your hottest licks.
  • Cock & Bull Pub: Mondays at 7 p.m. Popular among local musicians, you never know who you might see playing at Cock & Bull. Plus, the great beer selection doesn't hurt, if you've got a case of the pre-show jitters.
  • Pastry Art: Wednesdays at 7 p.m. This longstanding weekly event showcases original acoustic music — and let's not forget about the poets. One Monday each month, Steve McAllister hosts a night for aspiring poets to read their work in front of an audience.
